I had read an article earlier this week about the increasing spread (approx. 106 million new cases worldwide/year), and increasing resistance to antibiotics of gonorrhea. And then along comes this Tumblr post in a sexually active group that I’d not considered-the geriatric crowd.

All kidding and “nudge-nudge-wink-winking” aside, this is a serious issue. There are approx. 700,000 people are newly infected by gonorrhea in the U.S. each year, and less than half of these are reported to the CDC.

Resistant infections have been reported in countries with what is considered to be good healthcare systems; Australia, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden and the U.K. As it’s resistance is increasing, there are no new antibiotics in the pharmaceutical pipeline to treat it.

Diagnosis can be difficult, and I can imagine it would be even worse in an elderly population, as the symptoms can be mistaken for a UTI.

Even though this video is hilarious, it’s important that EVERYONE (especially teens and OLDER ADULTS) understand the importance of practicing safe sex.  Yes, everyone.  The loving older couple that sit in the porch down the street drinking their iced tea have a sex life.  Let’s make sure they are well educated and safe.

As my aunt said, “You do what you can to make your husband happy.  Why do you think your uncle is smiling all the time?!”

This goes back to my little project in Gero last month. The sex lecture in class made just about everyone squirm. I personally am not in the least embarrassed by sex. Plus this is hilarious. I hope I can get my leg up that high at 75. haha
